Eirik Bakke and Seth Johnson linked up on Tuesday to provide a secure midfield base from which James Milner, Jermaine Pennant, Alan Smith and Mark Viduka could attack.
Bakke was at his best after coming back from injury while Johnson, at last, produced probably his best display since scoring two goals against Blackburn earlier in the season.
Blackwell is now confident they can play crucial roles up to the end of the season.
"I thought they were excellent against Wolves," said Blackwell in the Yorkshire Evening Post. "Eirik was still making runs past the front two in the last 10 minutes and Seth put in a massive performance.
"That's the standard they've set themselves now and there's no excuse for them slipping below that. We know we need to get at teams at Elland Road because we've got to win our home games but, if we're going to do that, the two central midfielders have got to be prepared to cover a lot of ground.
"If they can keep things tight in there it frees up our wider players to go forward and take the game to the opposition.
"There have been times when we haven't been able to do that this season because the attacking players have been worrying about what's been going on behind them. It makes a big difference if they don't have to think about that."
