New signing Billy Paynter from Swindon Town has been ruled out of the start of the Championship campaign, leaving Grayson short of forward options.
And last season's 31-goal void left by Beckford's departure to Everton is Grayson's highest priority to replace.
"Billy is a good acquisition but, with him out, we're a little bit short of numbers," he told The Mail on Sunday. "Don't assume I'm not trying to get somebody else in. I told people our business wasn't finished. We're still talking to clubs about players."
