Boro boss Steve McClaren is almost certain to fail in his bid to sign Wigan's Jimmy Bullard and with Aston Villa currently having Bakke on loan, he may step in and offer Leeds a bid to prise him away.
But Villa have been in negotiations with Leeds and are still hopeful of extending his loan until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old has made seven appearances and is due to return to Elland Road at the end of January unless Villa extend his loan.
West Brom manager Bryan Robson, however, has also shown interest in the player, and with Baggies midfielder Andy Johnson reportedly a target for the Whites, a swap deal may also be on the cards.
