Grayson said: "It's a surprise I suppose as he's got 30-odd goals this season and is not in the team. We're a bit disappointed, but not too bothered, if Jermaine keeps scoring, so be it. He's taken it in his stride and in training looked bright and has not been affected. You can't let things like that affect you and he's more than happy with the way things are going at this moment with the team.
"Overall recognition will come if we get promoted this year and Jermaine will have played a major part in that. That's more important to us. While it's nice for individuals to get awards, it's more about the team and he realises that as well.
"What people tend to forget at times is that nominations and the teams were probably done six to eight weeks ago. And Jermaine's obviously scored a lot of goals in the last two months for us. But yes, it is surprising, although Matty Fryatt and Rickie Lambert have also scored lots of goals, so there's been good competition. The lad (Gary) Hooper at Scunthorpe has scored a lot of goals as well."
