Blues supporters set up a petition demanding any deal be scrapped.
Manager Steve Bruce said: “I can’t believe something like this has cost us a really good player. I’d been really excited about the prospect of Lee Bowyer coming and so, I believe, were the vast majority of our fans.”
Blues owner David Sullivan said: “Lee phoned to say he won’t be coming because he’s seen all this stuff on the internet. I’m absolutely gutted.”
