The centre-half was outstanding as United were held to a goalless draw at the Keepmoat and he is now hoping for an extended run in the first team.
Bruce told the Yorkshire Post: "There's always room for improvement but I was desperate to do well and I'm happy with the way I played. It's a good way to start off.
"It's been frustrating (to be out of the team) and any player you ask will say you don't sit on the bench out of choice.
"If you do, there's something wrong with you. We've had a few big games with good atmospheres and of course you want to play in those. I hope I've made the most of my opportunity and keeping my place against Sheffield United is my aim."
