The defender moved to Elland Road on-loan until the end of the season from Newcastle yesterday.
The 23-year-old admitted he was happy to follow some of his Scotland heroes by playing for Leeds, such as Billy Bremner, Eddie Gray and Gordon Strachan.
Caldwell told the club's official website: "When I was younger they were a club I always wanted to join because although they're a big club all over, in Scotland they're also one of the most supported English clubs.
"It was the fact that Leeds wanted me that swung it, I didn't know about their interest before yesterday, but when I did hear they were after me I just knew it was the team for me.
"I never had any hesitation in my mind to come, I was delighted to be asked to come and I felt privileged. I just jumped at the chance straight away.
"I am eager to help the club, help get some results that will keep us in the Premier League. Obviously if I do that I will be helping myself by playing more games, but first and foremost I am a team player and I just hope to be able to help the team.
"If I can play for Leeds and do well then I am sure Scotland caps will come, everybody knows Leeds are a big club and this is the best league, naturally that will help my international career. I just need to do well in the first team, get the wins and maybe good things will come from that.
"I am thinking along the lines of the team because I know if they do well then I will do well."
