Carver was promoted from his position of first-team coach yesterday, five weeks after he turned down the chance to become Carlisle United's manager.
The role at United– vacated by former number two Sam Ellis at the end of last season – will allow Carver to retain his coaching responsibilities while involving him with transfers and other administrative duties carried out by Kevin Blackwell.
Carver said: "I want to be a manager and this is a big step towards that. I'll be able to carry on with coaching the players but I'll also take some pressure off the manager by dealing with agents, transfers and the administrative side of things. This has been in the pipeline for a while, and it's just as big a role as I was offered at Carlisle."
