72-year-old Robson will be appointed in an advisory role to new Eire boss Steve Staunton, providing there are no last-minute hickups.
Staunton, Ireland's most-capped player, has recently been working as a coach at Walsall, and is due to be handed a four-year deal by the FAI. It is believed Robson will be given a two-year deal.
A recognised coach will also be required and Robson could turn to Carver, who was his assistant manager during his five years in charge at Newcastle and was appointed as a coach at Leeds by Kevin Blackwell.
Carver previously oversaw the Newcastle centre of excellence under Kevin Keegan, was youth coach under Kenny Dalglish and first-team coach under Ruud Gullit. It is believed he will be asked to work on a part-time basis.
