The Daily Mirror claim the England man has decided he must leave his hometown club to further his career at international level with Newcastle leading a £5m hunt.
Rumours have been filtering all season that he may leave with United's problems, but he has always stated he will stay and has never been drawn on the subject of his future beyond the end of this season.
The Leeds chairman hit back in the YEP: "Neither Alan Smith or his agent have come to me and said he wants to go. If people want to make comments that aren't true then that's their business but, as it stands, it's just more speculation from a southern-based newspaper.
"There's no quotes from Alan or anyone else in the piece and until I see a quote that's all it is. It's just like stories about ground-sharing and everything else; maybe people should run a story saying the Daily Mirror is up for sale. Let's reverse it and see what they think."
