The South African defender put pen on paper yesterday and is delighted with the deal.
Director, Peter Lorimer, said: "We feel Lucas could still have a vital role to play next season. He has proved this year that he is well capable of playing at the highest level if he can keep clear of injury.
"The main thing is that he is a great guy to have around the place and we feel he can have a positive influence on the development of young players like Matthew Kilgallon, for instance.
"Lucas has a wealth of experience to pass on, but as I said, he is still a top player in his own right. The deal means Lucas will also get a testimonial."
