Leeds slipped to their third home league defeat of the season against Leicester City in midweek and have lost five of their first 12 games back in the npower Championship.
Matteo said: "They've been a bit hit and miss. They seem to get a good result at the weekend then in the midweek games they can't seem to follow it up with a good performance.
"The consistency hasn't quite been there, but the one thing I would say is they've bounced back from bad results all season. I'm just hoping they can do that again against Cardiff next week.
"Simon Grayson hasn't quite found his best back four yet and that's a problem he's had all season. They're shipping too many goals and you can't afford to ship too many goals in any league.
"Leeds are doing that and if you're conceding two, three goals every game, nine times out of 10 you're going to get beat.
