The former Stockport hitman was believed to have been seen at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday evening to see Crewe play Wrexham in a friendly goalless draw, suggesting they may require some firepower up front.
Crewe boss Steve Holland confirmed his hope to resurrect the deal for Elding, a deal that collapsed earlier this summer as Elding wanted to stay at Leeds to fight for his place.
With a fee in the region of £150k, Elding would be seen as a coup for the Railwaymen, especially with a few other clubs said to be monitoring his situation at Elland Road.
