From Hero To Zero

But hanging on some railings outside the stadium in which he was hailed a hero for more than six years was a reminder of what some supporters think of him now.

By the main entrance to the ground was a replica Leeds shirt with Smith’s name and his old No 17 crossed out by a black marker pen.

In their place was written the slogan: 'Judas, kiss the badge now.'

Just a little further along was a banner which read: 'You said red wasn’t your colour. Cheers, Alan!!!!!'

'Once scum, always scum. Old friend from B juniors.'

A Smith friend said: "Alan was up at the training ground because he had a few goodbyes to say. He had to go into the stadium to clear out his belongings from the dressing room and also had to pick up his boots!"
