Going into Sunday's Elland Road clash with Fulham, Smith has already totted up seven cautions, including one in each of the last two matches since returning from a one-game suspension and since being asked to play in midfield.
Eddie Gray said in The Mirror: "He has no problem at all playing in midfield and it still gives him the opportunity to get forward.
"You've just got to make sure he doesn't go over the top and be too aggressive.
"Because he wants to be involved and work hard for the team, he has to control himself a bit more and I've explained that to him and he knows that."
