The Whites came from two goals down to beat Burnley 3-2 at the weekend and continue their recent trend of coming from behind to win.
The victory at Turf Moor extended United's unbeaten run to eight games, but Howson wants his side to start performing from the first whistle.
He said: "I don't know why it has happened so many times this season, maybe going behind settles us down or something like that.
"But obviously, we can only do that a certain amount of times so we need to cut that out from now on."
