The Whites bow out of the Premier League this afternoon against a club at the opposite end of football’s money spectrum, Chelsea.
Blackwell said in The Sun: "It’s unbelievable to think that three years ago we were a club who could go out and buy any player we wanted. Yet now we have nothing. It was Chelsea who were struggling for finances not so long ago but our situations have completely changed around.
"They are the haves and we are the have-nots. But, if it hadn’t been for Roman Abramovich, then where would Chelsea be now? What has happened at Elland Road has been so painful for our supporters to watch and be a part of.
"All I can say to them is that they have got to have the belief that it can all change back again and our fortunes can turn around as easily as Chelsea’s have. If that happens, then Leeds have a big future.”
Blackwell knows the qualities needed to get out of the First Division. He played a part in helping Sheffield United to the play-off final against Wolves last year. He added: "You need luck strength, power and organisation. You also need a bit of extra quality. Something like a player who can grab you 20 goals can give you the edge over the others."
