The England No 1 has been criticised in recent weeks for his form.
Schmeichel said: "I'm reading unbelievable things about Joe. It's the way people look at keepers in this country, especially English ones.
"If you punch a ball, the commentators say you are nervous. That's ridiculous. But because in England you have great legends like Banks and Peter Shilton, you are expected to catch everything like they did.
"People are questioning Joe - that's not good for a keeper. In Europe it's different. They accept we make mistakes."
