Questionnaire: Katherine Hannah
Birthplace |
North Ferriby near Hull, it’s not far from the Humber Bridge. |
How Long Have You Supported Leeds |
Since 1991 so just over 20 years. My family moved to Leeds at the time when they got promoted from the old Division Two, and I started taking an interest through my dad watching games on telly. |
First Leeds Game Attended |
Leeds v Spurs Dec 1991, we drew 1-1. It was freezing but I’ll never forget walking up the steps and out into the North East corner and seeing the pitch for the first time. Magical. |
Favourite Premier League Club |
Tricky, I quite like Swansea at the moment and the Martinez ethos of playing proper passing football. |
Have You A Nickname |
Not really, Spanner Hannah at school every now and then – really hoping that doesn’t make a comeback! |
What was your ambition as a child |
I might have wanted to be a ballet dancer for a while. Think I can safely rule that out now. |
Who did you idolise as a child |
Football wise I loved Gary Speed and then Alan Smith at Leeds. Music wise I was a big fan of Bros and Jason Donovan back in the day. The shame. |
What has given you the biggest thrill supporting Leeds |
Seeing Leeds collect the old First Division trophy at Elland Road. Getting automatic promotion from League One with Beckford’s winner against Bristol Rovers. And of course beating Man. Utd at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. I couldn’t get to the game but was dancing round my living room when the final whistle went. |
What has been the biggest disappointment supporting Leeds |
The Championship play-off final against Watford. After the long journey down to Cardiff and all the build up to the game I was so sure we were going to win. After about five minutes I realised it wasn’t going to happen. Gutted. |
What has been the saddest moment in football for you |
Hearing the news of Gary Speed’s death. I was in a taxi in London and heard it on the radio, I just couldn’t believe it. Still can’t really. |
Which present day footballer do you admire most |
Admire is maybe the wrong word but I love Mario Balotelli. He’s completely bonkers, but hugely entertaining. Football is lacking characters these days, especially in the Premier League. He’s probably a nightmare to manage but at least he’s never dull. |
Who, in your opinion, is the greatest ever Leeds player |
For his dedication and passion for Leeds, I’d say Lucas Radebe. But in terms of overall skill, it’d probably have to be Billy Bremner. |
Who has been the greatest influence on your career |
My mum and dad who always encouraged me in whatever I wanted to do. |
What job would you be doing if not a radio presenter |
Still something in journalism, I started off writing for Match football magazine so maybe something along those lines. |
Away from radio what do you enjoy doing most |
Cooking, and with the 4am starts I have at the moment doing the breakfast show, sleeping! |
What is the oddest thing you have had to do on the radio |
There have been loads – trampolining live on air, riding a mechanical horse, coming face to face with a massive tarantula to name just three. |
Which radio personality do you admire most |
Shelagh Fogarty and Peter Allen on 5Live and of course my co-host at BBC Leeds, the inimitable Martin Kelner. |
What is your favourite football ground |
Elland Road or course, and the old Hampden Park before it became all seater. I saw Motherwell play Dundee Utd in the Scottish FA Cup final there with my dad and grandma, Motherwell won 4-3 in extra time. Amazing atmosphere. |
Which guest would you most like to interview |
Joan Rivers would be fun, she’s had a fascinating life and is wonderfully indiscreet. |
What other sports and hobbies do you enjoy |
Running, swimming, cooking |
Away from football, who is your favourite sportsperson |
Usain Bolt. Anyone who lives on a diet of chicken nuggets and can still run that fast is a hero in my eyes. |
Money no object, who would you buy for Leeds |
Lionel Messi - genius. |
Do you have any superstitions |
I won’t walk under ladders |
What is your most prized possession |
I have a teddy bear that my grandma gave me on the day I was born. He’s totally moth eaten now but I’d be heartbroken if anything happened to him. |
Is there a work related dream you would like to achieve |
I’d love a crack at presenting Woman’s Hour on Radio 4 |
What is your favourite TV programme |
I’m a big fan of teatime quiz show Pointless. That or Flight of the Conchords. |
Who is your favourite TV star |
Sir David Attenborough, so knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. |
What is/are your favourite film(s) |
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” |
What is your favourite food |
Dark chocolate |
What is your favourite drink |
Red wine |
What is your favourite holiday resort |
Mauritius |
What books do you enjoy reading |
Trashy novels, I like Martina Cole or Tasmina Perry - a modern day Jackie Collins. That’s four years of an English Lit degree for you! |
Who is the best guest you have had on your show |
My favourite guests are ordinary people rather than celebs. They always have the best stories and tell it like it is, no PR spin. |
What do you dislike about football |
The people running the game at the highest level. FIFA and the FA seem so out of touch and reluctant to try anything new. |
