Keith Can Hack It For Reid

Reid and Leeds have been left dumbfounded by some decisions which have been crucial in some matches this season, including those by Jeff Winter and Paul Durkin this week.

Winter allowed a harmless Danny Murphy free-kick to count, giving Liverpool a vital 2-1 lead in last week’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield, despite three players being offside.

In the Carling Cup on Tuesday, Durkin failed to give a spot-kick when Quinton Fortune seemed to bring down Cyril Chapuis in the area with the game delicately poised at 1-1, allowing Man Utd to create an attack and score straight away, with Diego Forlan looking offside too.

Reid says his conversation with Hackett, who has taken over the top job following the departure of Philip Don, was more than beneficial.

“I got more out of the meeting with Keith Hackett than I had done in the previous few years speaking to Philip Don,” said Reid.

“I appreciate referees and assistants referees have difficult jobs, but I find some of their decisions recently have been easy, ones that have gone wrong.

“Crucial decisions have gone against us. That happens in football. Everyone makes mistakes.

“But I decided to speak to him about a few things anyway and it was a good meeting. We had a good chat and he was tremendous.

“It was good to sit down with somebody I highly respect, somebody who refereed me during my playing days on numerous occasions, and I bet that wasn’t easy!

“But I just expressed my point of view and I listened to what he had to say. It was the right time and place rather than after a game.

“I feel if you can sit down and have these chats then it can only be for the good of the game.

“If I was going to pick a man to go in there then it would be Keith.

“I know he is only doing it temporarily at the moment, but I think he would do a brilliant job if he was given the role permanently.”
