Lewis, 31, passed a medical on Wednesday and has signed a two-year contract with a further one-year option triggered by appearances.

He joined Fulham under Paul Bracewell in February 2000 when he left San Jose Earthquakes for £1m.

Usually employed on the left-side of midfield he is known for his ability from crosses and set-pieces. He was once dubbed 'The American Beckham'.

He made just 16 Premiership appearances for the Cottagers before he was transferred to Preston in November 2002 for £500k.

He has won over 50 caps for his country and played his final and 124th appearance for North End in the play-off final defeat to West Ham last month.

Lewis becomes Kevin Blackwell's fourth signing of the summer and follows striker David Healy in making the switch from Deepdale to Elland Road.
