The Californian's free-kick 16 minutes from time gave Leeds a 1-1 play-off semi-final lifeline against Preston and honours will be even for the second leg at Deepdale on Monday night.
Away goals don't count double in the play-off semi-finals and the winners of Monday's game know they will move to within 90 minutes of Premiership football.
Lewis said in the Yorkshire Evening Post: "It was important that we got level. Obviously our intention was to try and take a lead to Deepdale, but they ended up getting a quick goal at the start of the second half and that put us off a bit.
"For a couple of minutes the heads did start to drop, but we turned it back up and that says a lot about the players. The important thing is to give ourselves a chance going into the last game and we've done that.
"We were a little disappointed afterwards, but both teams did a good job and I'm sure it will be the same on Monday. There's still everything to play for.
"We have a good away record and we'll do our best to take it from here. It could prove a very important goal last night, but there's still some big games left and I hope to be contributing again."
