Versatile defender Matteo joined The Whites in the close season of 2000/2001 when he signed from Liverpool in a £4.25m switch, following Olivier Dacourt and Mark Viduka into Elland Road.
"Everyone writes Liverpool off and that's a mistake," Matteo stated in today's Yorkshire Evening Post. "They'll keep coming back. They've got a lot of good players and they've got a good squad. It won't be long before they get it right.
"It's certainly not a crisis when you're fifth in the league. Obviously with their high standards they will be expecting better and that will never change.
"They're trying to get back into the Champions League and we're battling away at the bottom.
"Liverpool will be seeing this as an important game, but it's equally important to us and we need a win as well.
"It will be tough, but both sides will be well fired up so it should be a good game.
"Times have changed for us now, you only have to look where we are in the table. Points are vital to us. We have to approach every game with the same belief that we can get a result, like we did at Manchester United. Every match has to be like that now."
