The 23-year-old Irish international is keen to stay but both clubs cannot agree on a permanent transfer fee so McPhail could be given a new start under caretaker-boss Eddie Gray.
McPhail said: “I love being here and the players and staff have made me feel really welcome.
“I haven’t been back to Leeds since I came down and I love Nottingham. I would love to stay at the club and have made that clear.”
Forest boss Paul Hart says that would appear unlikely as his board are unwilling to meet Leeds’ asking price of £750k.
Hart said: “I don’t expect anything to happen because the chairman has said there is no money for players until we push up the table.”
