The 26-year-old midfielder spoke to Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy before going on holiday and confirmed today that an agreement has been reached for a Bosman free transfer to the club he supported as a youngster.
"Subject to him passing his medical next Wednesday, he is signing for Sunderland," his father, Tommy Snr, said. "He is due back from honeymoon on Tuesday and he will go up there on Wednesday."
Leeds, Crystal Palace, Celtic and Wigan had been linked with moves for him after he rejected the chance to stay at Portman Road following the club's play-off failure last season.
"He had plenty of options, but if he was going to stay in the Championship, he would have stayed with Ipswich," added his father.
