The Bolton News report that United have now dropped out of the race for the teenager after being unable to guarantee Ward a regular starting place because of the arrival of Ross McCormack from Cardiff City.
Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has told interested Championship sides they will pay less for Ward's services the more appearances he makes.
It is understood that eleven such clubs are still in the chase along with League One outfits Southampton and Swindon Town, and three Scottish Premier League sides.
