The club had anticipated a drop of around 8,000 from last season but that figure has already been beaten with just around a month to go before the start of the season.
The number of season ticket holders is on course to be in excess of 19,000 as the club have frozen season ticket prices to encourage more sales.
Also, interest in the 'United for 20 Years' season ticket scheme is still growing with one supporter arriving at Elland Road today with a cheque for £37,500 to buy ten, one for himself and the others for an unofficial supporters group as a gesture of their commitment.
David Thompson, United's Head of Ticketing & Retail, said on the official club website: "The figures are very encouraging for us and I am sure it will give Kevin Blackwell and his players a lot of encouragement knowing that the fans are very much behind them.
"Twenty year season tickets are still available and today one supporter bought ten for his group. This shows the interest in the 20 year season tickets is still strong and it represents fantastic value. We see this as a show of faith from our supporters."
