Short's Blackburn contract runs out in the summer but the central defender has stated that he wants to play on after earlier talk of retirement.
Both Leeds and Sheffield United are linked with Short with his experience being useful for a concerted promotion challenge next season.
Meanwhile, Everton's Weir has revealed he is tempted by the prospect of a deal to join Leeds.
Weir's current contract also expires this summer and he admits he may be forced away from Goodison Park. "I know through an intermediary that Leeds will give me two years, which is an obvious attraction," the central defender told The Scotsman. "I am 35, but I feel as good as ever. It's true because I know on the pitch that nothing has changed."
Weir admitted he may take a little longer to recover between matches these days but he insisted: "The only signs you get are the night after a game and the next morning when you're a little more tired, a little stiffer, than before. But from game to game, while actually playing, there's no difference."
