It appears England boss Sven Goran Eriksson may leave out the striker when he names his squad tomorrow.
There are four strikers ahead of Smith. Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey and Darius Vassell. And the Swede also seems to prefer Spurs' Jermain Defoe to the Leeds-born striker.
But Leeds captain Matteo said in the Sunday Mirror: "Smithy badly wanted to go. I know how much getting into the squad meant to him. I have been hoping to God he was part of Sven's plans. He is so desperate to be on the plane.
"Alan's attitude is just unbelievable and I think, as a player, he's got the lot. OK, he's been having to come a lot deeper in the Leeds team this year and he has had to play out of position in midfield, especially early on.
"But despite that, I was really hoping that England would realise he was still a very good player."
