Smith said: "We seem to lack a bit of fight. That's something that's been missing all season. We just seem to roll over. There's been games at Everton where we let four in, six at Portsmouth. No disrespect, but that should not be happening against those teams.
"We lost four again at Birmingham, but we can't dwell on that now because we have games left that we can win. It's definitely too easy to blame the circumstances. As a group of players, when things are not going right off the pitch then it should make you stronger.
"Sometimes in games we've shown we're together and in others we haven't. But in the next eight games we've got to show we are together and focused and ready for it.
"We've had a lot of fight in some games, Manchester United away for one. Charlton away, Liverpool at home when we played good football and battled hard as well. But there have been too many games where we've rolled over."
