Smith admitted at a function on Sunday that he may be forced to leave Elland Road at the end of the campaign.
"Your support for me has been brilliant and that is what makes it hard," he told an audience at the function.
"I would love to score goals for Leeds United in the years ahead but it is a difficult time for everybody.
"I hope everyone understands if I have to leave. While I am here I will always give 100 per cent. Everyone knows that."
