The consortium have put the former Leeds and Scotland favourite at the top of their list of managerial targets.

The four-man group hope to complete a takeover of Leeds by the end of the week and have already identified Strachan as the man to lead the club.

Strachan quit Southampton last month to recharge his batteries and have hip surgery, but the consortium believe they can tempt him back into football, even if Leeds drop into the First Division.

The Scot, 47, would be a popular choice with Leeds fans who still idolise him after he skippered Leeds to their last league title success in 1992.

The consortium, led by insolvency expert Gerald Krasner, have tabled an offer worth around £20m to Leeds' creditors and they are very close to agreeing a deal.
