Newcastle have reportedly been interested in paying up to £5m for the former Sunderland man, but would now prefer the England U-21 cap to spend the rest of the season at St James' before making any permanent deal.
Much may depend on whether or not Leeds are forced to sell Mark Viduka or Alan Smith in the transfer window.
