Newcastle issued this brief statement on Thurday afternoon: "Newcastle United confirm that they have agreed a fee with Leeds United for the transfer of Jonathan Woodgate.
"The completion of the transfer is subject to the player agreeing personal terms with Newcastle United."
It is believed that Leeds agreed to accept Newcastle's offer because the £3million initial fee received for Robbie Fowler as a first instalment from Manchester City was not enough to reduce the club's estimated £77million debts.
