Venables in defence of Smith

The England international striker was dimissed for two bookable offences but Venables inisted that this latest decision against the United striker was all wrong.

He said: "I'm very very disappointed with the sending off, I thought it was a very poor decision.

"Up until that point we were in complete control of the game and it never looked like anything other than a win which we needed.

"I just didn't understand why either of the bookings were yellow cards, it is getting to the stage where he can't go in for anything.

"I had a word with him afterwards and he was really very low."
