"I was told they thought they weren't going to need the second leg," Hackney said.
"But don't under-estimate us, we're a good team with good players. We've not got the money that other clubs have but we've gone out there and shown a bit of heart.
"If we'd gone to Leeds and got a draw we'd have been happy. We've got that little cushion but it's not really a cushion. We don't need to be complacent."
Hackney created the opening goal on Monday with a first-half shot which deflected into the net off Danny Graham's back and was ultimately credited to the Carlisle striker.
The winger was also involved in the move which laid on the Cumbrian's second goal on 50 minutes and he is expected to recover from a minor ankle injury in time to play in tonight's 2nd leg.
Hackney said: "At Brunton Park we've got to show the same attitude and the same endeavour. We're in a strong position and now we've got to go back to our ground and do the same thing."
