With international strikers Alan Smith and Mark Viduka leading an exodus from Elland Road, the club are looking to bring in lower profile players to meet their current status and one such recruit is likely to be Whelan, according to the Telegraph.

Leeds-born Whelan, 29, is out of contract after a recent spell at Derby County and has indicated a desire to finish his career where he started.

Whelan was one of a clutch of promising young players who successfully came through the Leeds academy to win the FA Youth Cup in 1993. During the summer of that year he featured in the England Youth squad that won the European Youth Championship.

He made his Premier League debut for Leeds United at Sheffield Wednesday in May 1993, at the age of 18. On his debut for England's U-21 team, Whelan played at St James' Park in front of a record attendance, scoring the winner against the Republic of Ireland.
