The Whites have been chasing the Norwegian international for a while and have already failed with a bid to sign him when the transfer window closed in August.
Kevin Blackwell even flew to Norway to watch the 24-year old in Uefa Cup action for Viking last week.
The domestic football season in Norway finishes at the end of the month and sources close to Viking predict that Hangeland will sign on loan until December 31 with a permanent deal to follow when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Everton, Manchester City and Wigan have also been eyeing Hangeland, who can play in defence or midfield.
