Hull City booked their place in the Carabao Cup third round with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Premier League new boys Leeds United.
Mallik Wilks’ deflected fifth-minute strike looked to have won it for the Tigers, only for Ezgjan Alioski's 93rd-minute equaliser to send the tie to penalties.
But City held their nerve to win the shootout 9-8, with Alfie Jones netting the decisive spot-kick.
It was no less then Grant McCann’s men deserved after a dominant display and they will now travel to West Ham United in round three next Tuesday.
The headline team news saw Hull-born right-back Lewie Coyle captain the Tigers on his debut against the club with whom he started his career.
Fit-again Callum Elder, Alfie Jones and Sean McLoughlin completed a changed back four, with Dan Batty and James Scott also coming in and ex-White Wilks deployed up front.
New signing Thomas Mayer started on the bench, along with academy products Harvey Cartwright, Jacob Greaves, Billy Chadwick and Callum Jones.
McCann’s men took the lead inside three minutes at Gillingham and needed just five minutes to make the breakthrough at Elland Road.
Kiko Casilla’s wayward pass gifted City possession, with George Honeyman and Scott combining to tee up Wilks, whose 18-yard drive took a wicked deflection past a helpless home keeper.
The Tigers’ lightning-fast start almost brought a quick-fire second when Wilks found himself one-on-one but Casilla came off his line smartly to smother his effort.
Wilks was causing a young Leeds backline no end of problems, going close again on 13 minutes as he dispossessed Charlie Cresswell but his curling, goalbound shot blocked by Leif Davis.
There was a rare moment of concern for the visitors on 27 minutes as the ball broke for Alioski to let fly but Jones threw himself in the way to make a vital block.
Back came City, with Coyle delivering an inviting first-time cross for Lewis-Potter to head over the bar.
The unplayable Wilks continued to torment the hosts, driving through the middle and hitting a low left-footed shot which Casilla spilled but no one was on hand to pounce.
The chances for the visitors kept on coming. Lewis-Potter brilliantly brought down Batty’s diagonal pass and skipped inside Shackleton before bending a delightful effort inches wide of the far post.
In the last action of a one-sided half, Jones skimmed the roof of the net with a flicked header from Elder’s free-kick.
Mayer was introduced at the interval for his first appearance in black and amber, with Lewis-Potter the man to make way.
The first meaningful opportunity of the second period took 21 minutes to arrive, Greg Docherty taking aim from 25 yards and stinging the palms of Casilla with a well-struck drive.
The Spanish stopper thwarted Docherty again with 13 minutes left, beating away his venomous shot from an acute angle.
The danger wasn’t yet averted as Chadwick flashed in a cross towards Scott, whose clever backheel trickled agonisingly wide of the far post.
City spurned a golden chance to put the tie to bed four minutes from time as Scott burst forward down the left.
The 20-year-old’s perfectly-weighted pass put Docherty clean through on goal but again he was denied by Casilla, who blocked with his legs.
It wasn't until the 89th minute that Marcelo Bielsa's side finally registered an attempt on target, Robbie Gotts curling a tame effort straight at Matt Ingram.
The Tigers should have been out of sight and were left to rue all those missed chances as Leeds levelled in the third minute of added time.
A half-cleared corner dropped for Alioski to arrow a fierce left-footed shot into the roof of the net and take the tie to penalties.
